Dear friends and wonderful followers here on WHAT ABOUT WOMEN.
As many of you know, I have been busy for the past 18 months or so with a new book, Ultra Processed Women. The book looks at the specific impact of ultra processed food (UPF) on women’s bodies - and lives - and it’s out next Thursday (3rd July).
Over the past few weeks I’ve been writing more about UPF for you here on this substack, but it hasn’t quite felt right. I know that most of you are here for my writing on feminist issues, and although food and diet is (in my opinion) a feminist issue in its own right, it has felt like too much of a switch in tone. So I’ve been thinking about what to do, going forwards, and after much consideration (i.e dithering and panicking), I’m happy to be launching a whole new, completely separate substack: Unprocess with Milli Hill.
Nothing will change here on WHAT ABOUT WOMEN, in fact, it will probably help all of us a great deal now that I’ve made this clear distinction between subject matters! Everything here on WHAT ABOUT WOMEN will remain the same, and over on Unprocess, I’ll be writing new content about UPF, and the wider issues such as the impact of our food systems on the environment, on marginalised people, on women and children, and more. I’ll also be looking at other ways in which the contents of our plates and our shopping trollies are reflected in our world, for example our consumption of social media, our plastic use, our connection to nature, plants and animals, and our disconnection from each other.
I’m not going to make a strict publishing schedule for Unprocess because I want it to be creative and spontaneous. But you can rest assured I’ll be showing up every week with a mix of easy to read and thought-provoking written pieces; practical information such as easy ways to make your favourite dishes yourself; live chats; podcasts with experts; cookalongs; and other ways to unprocess your shopping trolley, cosmetics and toiletries bag, and your life. We’ll also have a chat area in the app where people can share information, tips and questions, and create a group of people who are committed to positive change. If you are interested in a life less processed, then Unprocess will be a brilliant community for you.
As my valued subscribers, you have all been added to the list at Unprocess - and of course, if you are not interested in this area of my work, you can easily unsubscribe. I hope you don’t though, as I’m very excited both to be branching out, and also to be keeping the core of WHAT ABOUT WOMEN intact, as I know so many of you like and appreciate what I do here.
You don’t have to pay to subscribe to Unprocess, but it is an option, and as an introductory offer, all annual subs are half price.
Subs are currently only £4 per month, and £35 per year - so with the half price offer that’s just £17.50 for a whole year’s sub.
If you have any questions, do get in touch. Next week, the book comes out on Thursday - eek! After that, normal service will be resumed here on WHAT ABOUT WOMEN, and we will also be getting up and running over on Unprocess.
Wherever or however you decide to support and follow me, I’m very grateful and I look forward to chatting and getting to know you - if I don’t already!
With love, Milli. x
