Writing for Change

All writing is for change. Whether it’s a poem that deepens your understanding of your life’s purpose, a political speech that shifts your perspective, a blog post that makes you feel you are not alone, or a book that opens your mind to a new way of thinking; the best writing is always transformative.

Since around 2010 I’ve been using words to provoke thought, to disrupt the dominant narrative, to argue, to convince, and to change. From my beginnings at my blog The Mule, I’ve gone on to write for change in four non-fiction books and countless articles in every leading UK paper. My activism has been focused on the unsung power of the female body, preventing unnecessary birth trauma, and, more recently, on maintaining women’s rights as the word ‘woman’ is eroded.

From January 2024 I’ll be offering a monthly Writing for Change group via this substack. Gathering together on zoom we will explore ways to tighten up our writing and keep the focus on bringing readers with us to make change happen. Your topics and interests don’t have to be the same as mine, and you might be interested in writing for change in short articles, books, here on substack, or even on social media posts. I will offer prompts, tips, clarifying exercises and examples, and there will also be opportunities for peer to peer sharing and feedback on your writing. I hope to share with you all I have learnt after many years of writing daily for change, and to see you develop your confidence and your voice to write the change you want to see in the world.

You don’t need any writing experience to join the group, just being passionate and interested is enough.

The Writing for Change group will be for paid subscribers only. All you need to do to join the group is subscribe. You will then be sent more information nearer the time, and a zoom link.

If you are on a low income and would like to join, please get in touch.

More information on Writing for Change will be sent out in early January. Our first meeting will be on the 25th Jan at 6.30-8.30pm.
